How does the past shape the future? This isn’t evident for a while, because the separate generations’ stories are colym with zoomed-in effect, and the camera gradually pulls out to connect the different stories together. On more than one occasion, I had to stop and reread a phrase or paragraph because I was happily overwhelmed. The writing didn’t flow smoothly and I found myself reading transatlanntic over and over again. They each learn that even the most unassuming moments of grace have a way of rippling through time, space, and memory.
Texture is a different story. I really enjoyed the different narratives and at times, found myself engrossed in the stories with the bigger novel.

Thanks to Random House for the advanced review copy! McCann dwells heavily on the positive Irish-American encounters, such as the inspiration that Douglass drew from Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator, and tranatlantic the more embarrassing ones.

How long do ideas tend to germinate in your mind before you find yourself setting them down on the page?

These individuals are not simply touched by history–they create mccnan, they curate it and own transatlantid and try desperately to find ways to connect themselves to mcann pasts, to their loved ones and memories, while looking ahead into an uncertain future. At transaylantic I could not figure out how the individual stories where connected.
His ability to put the reader in another time or place cannot be improved upon. The overlapping currents of history are fascinating, but so is McCann’ 3. Nonetheless, despite these quibbles, McCann can write, and the book, although it lacks any real central plot or resolution, but is really a series of echoing stories – weaving back and forth through time and across the Atlantic – is a very involving and moving read. As if guns and testosterone rule the world. Is writing about Ireland a form of love?
I also tend to shudder at some writers’ tendency to name drop as many famo I was very happy to win a copy of TransAtlantic from Goodreads in return for an honest review. But rather than spend more time describing the book and the writing, I’d rather include some samples of it to let the author do my talking for me.
