The fact that Severgnini is a journalist helps with the quality of the story, weaving culture, temperament and current events in one. I didn’t take much interest with the travels south of the country surprisingly but I just didn’t enjoy them as much as the northern areas, Milan in particular. A lot of things seemed pretty general and not backed up by enough statistics or even always real antidotes.

However, I can sum up the book in one sentence: Italy is the only workshop in the world that can turn out both Botticellis and Berlusconis. This book was full of the kinds of generalisation about Italy that I might have expected from Neither very enlightening nor very funny, this book does NOT do what it ddgli on the tin. The tales jumped all over the place with little or no segue. Anyone interested in Italy, especially those living here or planning a visit. The author is a perfect example of the type of Italian he describes – with a touch of genius, but insufferably arrogant.

Many times I found the author just blabbing and jabbering about things that were important to him, not so much the reader. He claimed the few bad ones were on the stage, or the cinema screen. For anyone who wants to understand the complexities of Italy in a much more informed and nuanced way, I would recommend giving this little book a miss and trying Tobias Jones’s “The Dark Heart of Italy”.

Yes, it’s written in an easy and lightweight style, but it seemed to me to be empty of anything really revelatory or thought-provoking about its subject.
